AI Token System
AI tokens are the currency that powers TeX64's artificial intelligence features. They represent the computational cost of processing your requests. Both input tokens (what you send) and output tokens (what the model generates) count toward your monthly quota. The exact token count for a given request can vary slightly depending on the model.
How Tokens Are Consumed
Tokens are consumed in two main ways:
- Chat: Conversations with the AI chat assistant. Both your messages and the AI's responses consume tokens.
- Completion: Code suggestions and inline completions in the editor. Generally uses fewer tokens than chat messages.
Input Tokens vs Output Tokens
Input tokens are the text you send to the AI model. Output tokens are the text the AI generates in response. Both count equally. Longer conversations with verbose responses will consume more tokens than shorter, more concise interactions.
Tips for Saving Tokens
- Ask concise questions. Overly detailed prompts consume more tokens.
- Group related conversations in one session. Starting a new session loses context history.
- Use completions over chat when possible. They're generally more efficient.
AI Feature Limits
TeX64's AI features have per-request limits to protect system resources and ensure fair usage across all users.
Chat Limits
Individual chat requests are subject to the following limits:
- Max input: The current context limit is applied by the app before each request.
- Max output: The current response limit is applied by the service.
Completion Limits
Inline code completions have different limits optimized for editor speed:
- Max input: The app selects the editor context within the current service limit.
- Max output: Completion length follows the current service limit.
Conversation Limits
Conversation sessions have cumulative limits:
- Max messages: The current per-session limit is enforced by the service and shown when reached.
- Max sessions: The current active-session limit is enforced by the service.
- Time to live: Session retention follows the current service policy.
Rate Limiting & Fair Usage
TeX64 implements rate limiting to protect system resources and ensure fair usage for all users:
- Standard rate: The service applies the current request rate for your plan.
- Burst limit: Interactive burst capacity adapts to current service conditions.
- Reset: Retry timing is returned with a rate-limit response.
Usage Dashboard
Paid plan users can monitor their AI token consumption in real-time from the account settings:
- Current month's token usage
- Remaining token budget
- Usage breakdown by feature (chat vs completions)
Token budgets reset monthly on the first day of your billing cycle. Unused tokens do not roll over to the next month.
Billing & Payment
All billing is managed securely through Stripe, the industry-leading payment processor. Subscriptions renew monthly on your billing date.
Changing Your Plan
- Upgrade: Upgrading to a higher plan takes effect immediately. You'll gain access to new features right away. No additional fees for mid-cycle upgrades.
- Downgrade: Downgrades take effect on your next billing date. You'll retain full access to your current plan until then.
Payment Issues
If a payment fails due to an expired card, insufficient funds, or other issues, we offer a grace period:
- 3-day grace period is automatically applied.
- Your plan remains active during this period.
- We'll email you with a link to update your payment method.
- We'll retry the charge on day 3.
- If still unresolved, your subscription will be canceled.
Invoices
Invoices are automatically emailed to your account email address. You can also view and download past invoices from your account settings.
Cancellation & Data Retention
You can cancel your subscription at any time. Here's what happens to your data:
How to Cancel
- Go to Account Settings > Subscription
- Click "Cancel Plan" button
- Confirm the cancellation
- Future renewals stop; paid-plan access continues through the end of the current billing period.
What Happens After Cancellation
- Access: Paid features remain available until the current billing period ends. Your account then moves to Free.
- Data retention: Cancellation does not delete local projects or files. Account and Axiom service data are handled under the Privacy Policy.
- Export: Local projects remain available and can be backed up normally.
- Re-signup: You can always sign up for a paid plan again at any time.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long do unused tokens last?
Token budgets reset monthly. Unused tokens at the end of the month do not roll over.
Will my chat history be saved if I upgrade?
Yes. All your chat history, projects, and files are preserved when you upgrade.
What happens if I run out of AI tokens?
Once you exhaust your token quota, AI features (chat and completions) become unavailable. However, all core features like the editor, PDF viewer, and build system continue to work. Your budget resets monthly.
When does my billing cycle reset?
Token budgets reset on your subscription renewal date. For example, if you sign up on March 15th, your budget resets on the 15th of every month.
Is my credit card secure?
Yes. All payments are processed through Stripe, the industry standard for secure payment processing. TeX64 never stores your credit card details.
Do I need the Pro plan?
It depends on your needs. Basic is sufficient for simple questions and completions. Pro is recommended if you need heavy AI usage, higher priority, or wider context for long-form work.
Are there student or education discounts?
Yes. Students with valid .edu email addresses are eligible for 50% off all plans. Contact our support team for more information.
Is there an enterprise plan?
Yes. For large organizations, we offer enterprise plans with custom rates, dedicated support, and custom limits. Contact our support team for details.
How is billing adjusted if I change plans mid-cycle?
Upgrades charge a prorated amount for the difference. Downgrades take effect on your next billing date without any refunds, but you keep your current plan until then.
