AI Token System

AI tokens are the currency that powers TeX64's artificial intelligence features. They represent the computational cost of processing your requests. Both input tokens (what you send) and output tokens (what the model generates) count toward your monthly quota.

How Tokens Are Consumed

Tokens are consumed in three main ways:

  • Chat: Conversations with the AI chat assistant. Both your messages and the AI's responses consume tokens.
  • Completion: Code suggestions and inline completions in the editor. Generally uses fewer tokens than chat messages.
  • Agent Mode: Pro plan only. Automated workflows that can read files, write code, run builds. Often uses more tokens due to multiple tool calls.

Input Tokens vs Output Tokens

Input tokens are the text you send to the AI model. Output tokens are the text the AI generates in response. Both count equally. Longer conversations with verbose responses will consume more tokens than shorter, more concise interactions.

Tips for Saving Tokens

  • Ask concise questions. Overly detailed prompts consume more tokens.
  • Group related conversations in one session. Starting a new session loses context history.
  • Use completions over chat when possible. They're generally more efficient.
  • Reserve Agent Mode for complex tasks. Simple questions don't need automation.

AI Feature Limits

TeX64's AI features have per-request limits to protect system resources and ensure fair usage across all users.

Chat Limits

Individual chat requests are subject to the following limits:

  • Max input: 3,200 tokens per request (approximately 2,400 words).
  • Max output: 512 tokens per response (approximately 384 words).
These limits ensure responses are generated promptly and resources are used efficiently.

Completion Limits

Inline code completions have different limits optimized for editor speed:

  • Max input: 1,200 tokens per request (editor context).
  • Max output: 96 tokens per completion (typically 1-2 lines of code).

Conversation Limits

Conversation sessions have cumulative limits:

  • Max messages: 80 messages per session. After reaching this, start a new session.
  • Max sessions: 24 concurrent sessions. Older sessions can be archived or deleted.
  • Time to live: 3 days (TTL). Sessions auto-expire after 3 days of inactivity.

Agent Mode Limits (Pro Plan Only)

Agent Mode is an advanced feature available exclusively to Pro plan subscribers. It enables automation of complex tasks but operates within safety limits:

Execution Limits

  • Max steps: 8 steps per agent run. Each step is a single tool invocation (e.g., read file, write file).
  • Max wall time: 25 seconds per run. The agent will stop if it exceeds this time limit.
  • Max context: 200 KB maximum context. Limits how much data the agent can read and process.

Available Tools

Agent Mode has access to the following tool categories:

  • fs.read, fs.write, fs.searchFile system operations. Read, write, and search files in your project.
  • editor.diff, editor.apply, editor.undoEditor operations. Show diffs, apply changes, and undo actions.
  • build.run, logs.tailBuild operations. Compile your project and view build logs.

Rate Limiting & Fair Usage

TeX64 implements rate limiting to protect system resources and ensure fair usage for all users:

  • Standard rate: 30 requests per minute. Applies to all plans.
  • Burst limit: Up to 100 requests allowed in short bursts for interactive use.
  • Reset: Resets each minute. Cannot be circumvented by using multiple short sessions.
If you hit the rate limit, you'll receive a 429 error. Simply wait a minute and retry your request.

Usage Dashboard

Paid plan users can monitor their AI token consumption in real-time from the account settings:

  • Current month's token usage
  • Remaining token budget
  • Usage breakdown by feature (chat vs completions vs agent)
  • Historical usage trends
  • Daily usage graph

Token budgets reset monthly on the first day of your billing cycle. Unused tokens do not roll over to the next month.

Billing & Payment

All billing is managed securely through Stripe, the industry-leading payment processor. Subscriptions renew monthly on your billing date.

Changing Your Plan

  • Upgrade: Upgrading to a higher plan takes effect immediately. You'll gain access to new features right away. No additional fees for mid-cycle upgrades.
  • Downgrade: Downgrades take effect on your next billing date. You'll retain full access to your current plan until then.

Payment Issues

If a payment fails due to an expired card, insufficient funds, or other issues, we offer a grace period:

  • 3-day grace period is automatically applied.
  • Your plan remains active during this period.
  • We'll email you with a link to update your payment method.
  • We'll retry the charge on day 3.
  • If still unresolved, your subscription will be canceled.

Invoices

Invoices are automatically emailed to your account email address. You can also view and download past invoices from your account settings.

You can cancel your subscription at any time. Here's what happens to your data:

How to Cancel

  • Confirm the cancellation
  • Cancellation takes effect immediately.

Before canceling, make sure to back up your projects. Data cannot be recovered after the 90-day retention period.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do unused tokens last?

Token budgets reset monthly. Unused tokens at the end of the month do not roll over.

Will my chat history be saved if I upgrade?

Yes. All your chat history, projects, and files are preserved when you upgrade.

What happens if I run out of AI tokens?

Once you exhaust your token quota, AI features (chat, completions, Agent Mode) become unavailable. However, all core features like the editor, PDF viewer, and build system continue to work. Your budget resets monthly.

What can Agent Mode do?

Agent Mode automates complex multi-step tasks. It can read files, analyze code, make changes, run builds, and fix errors. Examples include refactoring multiple files, generating documentation, auto-fixing build errors, and more.

When does my billing cycle reset?

Token budgets reset on your subscription renewal date. For example, if you sign up on March 15th, your budget resets on the 15th of every month.

Is my credit card secure?

Yes. All payments are processed through Stripe, the industry standard for secure payment processing. TeX64 never stores your credit card details.

Do I need the Pro plan?

It depends on your needs. Basic is sufficient for simple questions and completions. Pro is recommended if you need complex automation (Agent Mode) or heavy AI usage.

Are there student or education discounts?

Yes. Students with valid .edu email addresses are eligible for 50% off all plans. Contact our support team for more information.

Is there an enterprise plan?

Yes. For large organizations, we offer enterprise plans with custom rates, dedicated support, and custom limits. Contact our support team for details.

How is billing adjusted if I change plans mid-cycle?

Upgrades charge a prorated amount for the difference. Downgrades take effect on your next billing date without any refunds, but you keep your current plan until then.
